The Miniature, Children’s Furniture, and Memory
The world of children is a welcoming place for most everyone. It’s not as if it’s a smaller version of the adult world, although it sometimes seems like it. Wandering around the physical or virtual worlds of childrens furniture can seem like entering into a wonderland. The objects have their counterparts in the regular world of objects, but there are touches of magic that make them something else entirely. In essence, though, they do reflect the world of grown-ups, and make for a space that’s all their own. One can see traces of earlier memories in items that are more carefully crafted than others, and they will certainly influence the memories of the young ones when they get older.
This relationship between real worlds and created ones has the same effect that any miniature might have. In a museum context, a miniature world has the ability to change the way the spectator looks at their own world, and reflect on it in new ways. It’s also an attempt to encapsulate the most essential elements, and present them in new light. For children, however, the realm of their own room does become the perfect reflection of the outside world. It’s a way of containing everything that’s nurturing from the world at large, and placing it in a context that promotes real growth.
