What is the Air Filter and Why Should You Replace It?
There are a lot of myths out there about what an air filter is, what it can do, and what happens in your car when you change it. Here are the facts, and if you don’t believe it, take a look in your Buick Le Sabre repair manual for more information.
The car engine, when it is working properly moves a lot of hot air around. How clean the air is inside the engine is essential to keeping the car running properly because the gas is put into the chamber in small amounts and the pistons compress it until it combusts and mixes with the air . This old air is moved through the filter and made clean again. If the air is not very clean, the gasoline will have a harder time combusting. The combustion from the oil igniting and mixing with the air makes the drive shaft turn and that is what makes the car move.
The air filter traps all of the unwanted particles in the air that is in the engine and holds onto them so that the air inside the engine is clean enough for the car to keep being able to run in this way. When the air is dirty it takes more gasoline to make the same combustion and therefore the same rotation in the motor. When you replace the air filter, it removes the stuff that was stuck in the old one and allows the fresh one to catch new particles, cleaning up the air and using less gas. That is why you should look at your automotive repair manuals and replace your air filter every fifteen hundred miles or so.
